The structure of the CEMSS for the most part is of various plastic materials. The walls are two layers of 3/8" plexiglass with an inch layer of foam insulation sandwiched between. The plant chamber walls are double-walled polycarbonate greenhouse glazing, allowing for 90% light transmission and an insulation value rated at R-1.6. The unit will be sealed airtight to allow for the monitoring of the CO2/O2 cycles. A simple 12 vdc HVAC system will be used to help keep the temperature and humidity stable.
The Caves of Mars Project is funded by a NIAC Phase II Grant from the NASA Institute for Advanced Concepts.
