Tubular Modeling: Building a Backyard Lava Tube

The Basic MaterialsProblem:
How to construct a portable, convincing model of a lava tube cave suitable for illustrating the concept of using such caves as habitats on Mars?

Solution:
Making use of today's modern miracle spray-can synthetics and common balloons filled with water, a realistic lava tube cave model can be created relatively easy.

Note:
Many of the products used in the process are toxic, and should be handled with care. We urge all to read the warning labels and work with an adult. Paper mache can be substituted for the spray foam with great results, and less risk. This may in fact be a better option for our younger back-yard lava tube modelers.
